Choose the right pillow
Do you often find yourself tossing and turning in your bed because you feel something is not alright? It could be your pillow. A hard, overused pillow could be past its prime causing discomfort and worsening of body pains. A pillow should not last any longer than two years.
The ideal time to change your pillow is after every 12-18 months. This constant change allows the body to be held in the right posture thus preventing body aches and any health risks. A pillow that has stayed too long may have mold, mildew, skin cells that double its weight.
Change your sleeping position
Before purchasing a new pillow, check your sleeping position first. It is important to note the sleeping posture as your choice of body pillow should promote the neutral alignment. The neutral alignment is a position where the head sits squarely on the shoulders without reaching too forward or leaning too back.
If you sleep on your side, buy a firm pillow that fills the distance between the ears and shoulder. If you sleep on your back, then buy a thinner pillow with an extra loft in the bottom. A stomach sleeper should get a flat pillow that takes care of your back.
Pillow stuffing options to consider
There are several types of stuffing used in pillows. If the pillow is made of foam, look at the density. The higher the density, the less the shrinkage. Latex pillows are the strongest pillows that offer long-lasting service and protection against mildew and mold. Memory foam pillows are popular because they mold and shape into the form of the body thus maintaining a comfortable position for the body. They may have heat retention properties that are not desirable and a horrible chemical odor that does not agree well with many people.
Wool and cotton pillows are firm and resistant to mold and dust mites. They are also hypoallergenic but may not be your preference if you like soft pillows. The squishiest pillows are feather or down pillows which are perfect if you want a soft, comfy feel. They offer adequate support to the body.
