Argyll history has a long and proud Scottish tradition dating back to 1685 (17th century) when in 1701, Archibald Lord Lorne became the first Duke of Argyll. Argyll became the name under which the Scottish clan, the Campbells, fought and died on many a bloody battlefield during the 17th and 18th centuries. A picture of Inverary Castle, the Argyll castle where the Duke of Argyll now lives, is hanging in the main office. The word "Argyll" means "Home" and "Our Own People" and comes from the word "Argyllshire" which is a community in Scotland. The people, known as Argylls, were Scottish warriors and statesmen back in the 17th and 18th centuries. The boar's head on the school crest was adopted by the Campbell Clan as part of the family crest because legend indicates that one of the early Dukes of Argyll was killed fighting a wild boar that had been terrorizing his community.
